Why we choose horses

During this period of early Spring, Mathieu and his draft horse Ussard have been working certain plots of our Syrah and Roussanne vines in the Faysses area.

This area forms the base of all our best wines, and the soils, which are a mix of sandy clay and limestone pebbles, are very fragile. They are easily compacted which can bring about problems associated with water retention, lack of oxygen and a loss of organic matter.

When we choose to work with horses, the goal is to limit soil erosion due to mechanisation and to respect the soil’s natural balance. By prioritisng everything that is living in the earth (particularly earthworms and microorganisms) we strenghen the exchange between soil and the vine, bringing about a much better expression of the terroir in our wines.

So, with the help of Mathieu and Ussard, these plots will be worked throughout the year, plowing and weed protection being their primary labour.
